Data Science in the Biotech Research Organization
In which we explored philosophical and practical questions on this topic
Hello fellow datanistas!
I was recently at ODSC East, leading a hands-off tutorial titled “Data Science in the Biotech Organization.” Even as a tutorial leader, I learned a ton and documented the entire experience in my latest blog post. This was distinct from my usual kind of (often highly technical) tutorials; it was a discussion of the nuances of mission formulation, problem-solving, value articulation, and overcoming challenges that are unique to the biotech sector.
In this post, I share insights from both my role at Moderna and the diverse perspectives of attendees, ranging from those deeply embedded in biotech to others curious about the field. We explored everything from crafting a team's mission to the specific problem classes we tackle, how we articulate and deliver value, and the challenges we face in setting our teams up for success. And yes, I couldn’t help it — I even included some pseudo-code to break down our discussion format!
Whether you're in biotech/pharma, considering a career shift into this fascinating world, or simply curious about how data science teams operate in different industries, I believe there's something in this post for you. I know for a fact that I learned a ton in return from the discussion!
So, if you find the journey of setting up a data science team within a biotech research organization as intriguing as I do, please check out the full post here. If you know someone who might benefit from this read, please forward this message to them. Let's spread the knowledge and support each other in our data science endeavours.
Happy leading :)
Eric
