A Modest Proposal for Data Catalogues at Biotechs
Alternatively titled: How to Make Data Catalogues Actually Useful
Hello fellow datanistas!
Why do data platform strategies often struggle with adoption in biotech companies? In my latest blog post, I explore a common flaw in these strategies and propose a more effective approach.
Having worked at companies like Moderna and Novartis, I've noticed a recurring issue: the challenge of getting buy-in for new data platforms. The problem often lies in asking scientists to change their existing workflows without offering immediate benefits.
My proposal suggests starting with computational and data scientists, building tools that integrate seamlessly with existing platforms like OneDrive and SharePoint. This approach focuses on automating data cataloguing and leveraging natural data sharing interactions.
By treating data cataloguing as an interaction logging problem, we can create a system that grows organically, supports compliance, and is actually used by the people it serves.
The path to better data management in biotech doesn't require massive changes. By starting small, leveraging existing systems, and automating processes, we can build a data platform that delivers real value.
